Five Cocktails without the Calories

Mom "Plus"

MOM+ is movement, a call to action, and manifesto founded by Fabiana Ferrarini, designed to empower and encourage "Moms" to embrace and celebrate their non-mom ass-ets & identity. Mom + Fitness Junkie, Mom + Rock-Climber, Mom + Model, Mom + (you fill in the blank). MOM+ is about cherishing motherhood but never forgetting to embrace and celebrate our other non-mom identities. Moms can be strong. Moms can be sexy. Moms can be ... (fill in the blank).

So it's been a long week of grinding away at the gym and keeping up with work, and now that it's finally Friday, it's finally time for some you time.

Though if you're like the rest us, going out and enjoying a few drinks can kind of seem like an invitation to undoing all the hard work you've put in at the gym. And as many cocktails hide some serious calories and grams of sugar beneath their little umbrellas, you would be right in being more than a little hesitant.

It's true, some drinks can easily rack up the calories, a single margarita itself can add a massive 500 calories to your diet with just a single glass, quietly sabotaging your progress in looking as good as you feel. And we even begun to talk about how much sugar some drinks can pack.

Though you don't need to completely give up having a good time and unwinding with a glass or catching up with friends at the bar, instead treat your night out the same as you would treat planning your meals for the day. We know that without a proper plan for nutrition, you're more likely to fall prey to making a poor dietary decision. The same thing goes for our nights out. With a proper plan and a clear picture of what we should and shouldn't be drinking, we can enjoy the night and not worry about counting calories.

So the next time you find yourself at the bar, try ordering a few of these drinks instead…

Vodka Soda with Mint leaves

The vodka soda is the sophisticated way of adding a little bit of serious taste to your night while still avoiding too much sugar and calories. Super easy to make and always a crowd favorite, learning how to make one of these will certainly delight not only you and your friends but your waist as well.

Even better, if you find yourself out for the night with the girls, almost every bar is sure to have everything you need, and who knows you might even get a few bonus points with the bartender for ordering a classic.

While my favorite recipe calls for a solid serving of Grey Goose, you can feel free to substitute in your favorite vodka instead.

Making the Perfect Vodka Soda

What you'll need to get started…

• Grey Goose or your own favorite vodka…

• One fresh cut lemon…

• A few leaves of fresh mint…

• A shaker…

• And of course soda water

So let's start mixing ourselves a proper Vodka Soda…

• Start by adding 1oz of Grey Goose, or vodka of your choice, and a few ice cubes to your shaker…

• In a separate bowl or glass, muddle two pieces of lemon with a few fresh mint leaves and add the mixture to the shaker…

• Throw 4oz of soda water and a few ice cubes into your shaker…

• Simply shake, serve and enjoy!

Classic Mojito

If you're a fan of rum, then say hello to your new favorite drink.

The mojito is a classic cocktail that has been experimented, tested, and twisted over the years into new and exciting variations. Building off of the classic recipe you can add fresh fruit to add a bit of flavor without extra sugar and calories or simple just enjoy the time tested flavor of the original.

Whatever you're preference, the mojito comes in at around 160 calories, making it an amazing choice for enjoying a cool summer night while not having to worry about your waist line in the morning.

This classic mojito recipe is easy and fun to make while coming in low on the calories without having to sacrifice flavor…

What you'll need to get started…

• A sprig of fresh mint leaves…

• Your favorite light rum…

• Simple Syrup (you can make your own rather quickly using stevia instead for a healthier option)…

• A fresh lime…

• And some soda water…

This recipe calls for a homemade simple syrup which is pretty easy to make but if you want you can sub in 1 ½ tablespoons of your favorite sugar substitute in place of the syrup.

To make your own simple syrup, which can be stored and saved for later, just start by bringing a few ounces of water to a boil in a small pot. Then add a 4-6 (depending on how sweet you prefer yours to be) of stevia and stir until it is fully dissolved. Once everything has dissolved, remove the pot from the heat and allow your simple syrup to cool. Then simply just store your syrup until you're ready to make a cocktail…

So let's fix ourselves a classic mojito for cool summer afternoons…

• Start by adding 2oz of your stevia simple syrup, 1oz rum, a few leaves from your fresh sprig of mint leaves, a little bit of freshly squeezed lime juice to a tall glass…

• Using either a pestle if you have one or just a spoon, muddle everything together at the bottom of the glass…

• And then simply add some ice to your glass, top off everything with a little bit of soda water, and enjoy…

• Bonus Mojito Tip- Try adding a few slices of your favorite fruit to the mixture before you start muddling for a fruity spin on this classic.

A Spruced Up Old Fashioned…

The old fashioned has long been the go to for every no frill drinker.

Easy to make with things you might have around the house, though only if you keep bitters laying around your kitchen, and a bit of a fun drink to mix, this take on the old fashioned has updated the classic recipe to be a bit more forgiving with its calories while not skimping on flavor…

What you'll need to get started…

• Angostura bitters, (you can pick this up at most local grocers)…

• Simple syrup, hopefully you still have some left over from the mojitos…

• Your favorite whiskey, (bourbon lends itself well to this recipe)…

• A bit of an orange peel…

• And finally a maraschino cherry

Traditionally mixed and served in a small glass with sugar instead of stevia simple syrup, this remixed classic is easy to make and certain to impress your friends with your refined tastes.

So let's start mixing ourselves a Spruced Up Old Fashioned…

• In a small glass, mix together just a couple dashes of the bitters with a teaspoon of your stevia simple sugar…

• Then, add a few ice cubes and gently stir…

• Grab your orange peel and gently release the oils by softly pressing the peel against the inner rim of your glass before throwing the peel in…

• Finally, just add a couple of ounces of your favorite bourbon, mix, and lastly top with the maraschino cherry…

So next time the girls call you for a night out or want to come over for drinks, instead of spending the night nursing a tonic water, ask the bartender for one of these low calorie cocktails and enjoy a guilt free night of fun, after all don't we all deserve a bit of fun?
